Westmoreland was a native of Tupelo, Mississippi, and his first year with the Bulldogs program was a preferred walk-on. Sam was an offensive lineman who was a standout at Tupelo High School, he was majoring in industrial technology at Mississippi State University. Sam stood a height of 6 feet and 4 inches and weighed 260 pounds.

As of now, no cause of death has been revealed. Mississippi State said it was working cooperatively with the athletic department and local authorities to determine the facts of this incident. The school will have no further comment until that assessment is completed.
