Garrett Brown (born April 6, 1942) is an American cinematographer who is best known as the creator of the Steadicam, which was invented by him. Using Brown’s innovation, cameramen may shoot while walking without experiencing the usual shaking and jostling that comes with using a handheld camera. In 1976, the Hal Ashby film Bound for Glory won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and the Steadicam has since been used on films such as Rocky, where it was used to film Rocky’s running and training sequences, and Return of the Jedi, where Brown walked through a Redwood forest with a Steadicam shooting film at 1 frame per second to achieve the illusion of high speed motion during the speeder-bomb sequence. During the development of the first Steadicam technology, a scene from Rocky was shot that carried the audience up the stairs of the Philadelphia Art Museum and culminated in a victorious moment at the top of the steps. When director John Avildsen was viewed the video, he immediately felt it would work well in the training scene. Many tourists to Philadelphia have taken the effort to visit that location and sprint up the stairs, either alone or in groups, to experience that one-of-a-kind vista as well as to participate in the excitement and victorious emotion generated by that sequence in the following decades.  The iconic horror picture The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson and directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1980, made significant use of the Steadicam. Steadicam operator Brown’s work may be seen in more than seventy motion films. Brown is also the inventor of the SkyCam (which is used for football games), the DiveCam (which is used to track Olympic divers), and the MobyCam (underwater camera following olympic swimmers). Garrett Brown is the father of Jonathan Brown, who is a professional cinematographer in his own right. Garrett Brown was born in the United Kingdom. Both worked as Steadicam operators on the film Bulworth, which was directed by and starred Warren Beatty, and they got to know one other. He was a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and the Directors Guild of America, and he was the recipient of an Academy Award for Scientific or Technical Achievement and an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his invention of the Steadicam. He was also a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and the Directors Guild of America.
