Eclectic Style Clothing Is Trending

June 2024 · 4 minute read

In the world of fashion, we’re about to enter a new era of retro styles, chunky accessories and textured, baggy silhouettes – it’s time to try eclectic fashion.

In 2023, quiet luxury ruled the runway with its timeless trench coats, tailored trousers and crisp yet simple tees. But in 2024, fashion is turning away from the minimalistic side and is embracing retro streetwear and bold stylings. In fact, “eclectic clothing style” searches on Pinterest have surged by +130% in the past few months.

The antithesis of the clean girl aesthetic, eclectic style clothing – including the “eclectic grandpa” trend, which is composed of kitschy knitwear, loafers, baseball caps and anything vintage – is the new go-to style for celebrities like Harry Styles, Gigi Hadid and Tyler The Creator. While you can mimic the look with a few custom or even thrifted pieces, part of the allure around this new trend is embracing individuality and personal style. Not only this, but Gen-Z are looking for unique clothing that can last the test of time and will still look stylish when they are actually the age of the grandparents they’re drawing inspiration from.

“I think people are bored of the trends that have dominated for far too long – muted colors, lack of prints, basics, active and loungewear and the most boring, quiet luxury,” says Leila Shams, CEO of TA3. “The new trend I’m seeing is ‘70s and ‘90s inspired. I love the big hair, bold prints and bright colors, like leopard, neon and rainbow, that are dominating right now.”

There are endless ways to embrace the latest trend with timelessness and elegance – read on below for some curated fits to give some inspiration on how to style the buzzy look.

If you’re not one to shy away from color but still want something “wearable,” embracing a bold, chunky sweater or sweater vest is an easy way to incorporate eclectic styling into your daily routine. Try layering on top of an oversized long sleeve shirt and pair with a patterned pair of trousers to add a bit of dimension. Mixing colors, textures and patterns allows for a more unique style that still feels balanced and chic.

Tyler The Creator styled modern textures and styles with classic menswear pieces to create a balanced, eclectic look. Arguably the father of grandpa-style clothing, the kitschy patterned sweater brings a bit of fun, preppy styling to the classic denim jeans and sophisticated loafers. Paired with a matching green trucker hat and cross-body bag, Tyler proves embracing retro fashion with a modern twist doesn’t have to be hard.

One of the key elements behind the eclectic styling trend is focused on baggy silhouettes. Honoring the styles of the ‘70s, you can give an nod to the hippie fashion era by pairing your baggy skirts with oversized tops. Knitted textures, leopard print and chunky accessories really bring these customized styles together for a chic streetwear look.

An homage to the ‘90s, Gigi Hadid styled her tight sweater vest and vintage leather jacket with chunky sneakers and customized denim for a look that screams streetwear. Proving that you can easily mix and match colors and textures without it overwhelming your outfit, this style gives you just enough edge to embrace the latest trend while still feeling casual enough to run your daily errands.

Leopard Print

À la the mob wife aesthetic, leopard print is back in vogue and is seemingly here to stay. In case you’re not quite ready to do a full fit of animal print, try layering a leopard print shirt with a neutral pant and jacket. If you’re ready to go a bit further, embrace bold colors and textures by adding a pair of red gloves and chunky, slouchy boots for extra dimension.

Tweed Jackets

The tweed jacket is a staple every woman, and man, should have in their wardrobe. With such a vintage classic, you can pair the tweed jacket with almost anything for an effortless, just-threw-this-on look. Try styling with slim, black trousers and a matching tweed top to feel like an off the runway model wherever you go.
