Demi Lovato in Ester Abner, with Danica Roem at the AMAs: pretty or boring?

Demi Lovato brought newly elected transgender lawmaker from Virginia, Danica Roem, with her to the AMAs. This was a great idea in theory and Danica was lovely and well spoken in the interview I saw on the red carpet on E!. Demi, on the other hand, claimed that she could relate to Danica and that she wanted to bring her to AMAs because “I feel like we’ve been through some of the same things” and that her song “Sorry Not Sorry” shows “the bullying I’ve experienced on a daily basis with haters and I’m kind of shutting them down.” I thought “Sorry Not Sorry” was about showing an ex you’re living your best life and now I’m disappointed. Demi didn’t come across half as well as Danica did, is what I’m saying, and she didn’t need to make it all about Demi. (Incidentally, I read a great profile of Danica in the NY Times about how she won her district by being relatable and focusing on achievable solutions to problems in her area, particularly the congested commutes into DC.)

This is ultimately a fashion post with more gowns from the AMAs though. Demi was in a strapless Ester Abner dress with a gathered overlay on top of a nude-colored lining. This dress is gorgeous and I love the detail. It also complement’s Danica’s look in that the journalist and metal head (she is!) was also in black, in an off the shoulder gown with a sheer neckline. Demi performed last night at the AMAs, she did “Sorry Not Sorry” while mean tweets showed on the screen behind her. Lame. Look at how genuinely happy Danica looks to be there.

Here’s host Tracee Ellis Ross in ruby Stella McCartney. Tracee presented the lifetime achievement award to her mom, Diana Ross, and she homaged some of her mom’s amazing disco fashion during the ceremony. You can see Tracee’s outfit changes on People’s site, she went for drama! I love Tracee she really knows how to bring it. This dress reminds me of some of Tracee’s JcPenney collection in that there’s plenty of jewel tone sequins and holiday outfits. I don’t normally shop retail, I love thrift shops, vintage and secondhand fashion, but I’m going to check out Tracee’s line and maybe buy some pieces.

Tracee’s legendary mom, Diana Ross, 73, in an weird poofy black sweetheart neckline dress and a giant hat with a veil and making it all work on the red carpet. Here’s a link to a video of Diana accepting her lifetime achievement award, surrounded by her friends and family.

Lea Michele was in J. Mendel and she was on the red carpet with her stylist, Brad Goreski. Her makeup was too muted and matchy and something was going on with her face, like she just got fresh lip injections and couldn’t move her muscles normally. This dress is cheesy and too fussy, I dislike the color, and look at Lea spreading out the skirt to create drama where there is none.

Here’s Pink in Monique Lhullier, in a dress that’s very similar to the tiered tulle thing she wore to the CMAs. She likes a huge gown with a giant skirt and she’s consistent. I do like the color and the floral appliques along the bodice. Pink performed “Everybody Hurts” with Kelly Clarkson, which you can see at Popsugar.

Speaking of Kelly Clarkson, she wore a black velvet and gold metallic off-the-shoulder Christian Siriano gown. She brought her 16 year-old stepdaughter and three year-old daughter with her. Cute! I like this gown it’s kind of perfect for the season. Her makeup was a little dark for my taste but it’s not bad.

Heidi Klum was in Vintage Gianni Versace and I loved this gown so much. It’s got that awesome 80s vibe without going too far with it. (It may indeed be 80s/90s.) The wavy sequin pastel pattern is perfection. It didn’t need to be so low cut and Heidi could have done something differently with her hair, but that’s a minor complaint.
